Mogollon Rim Adventure

You won't be disappointed in seeing Mogollon Rim. We offer a canyon day tour as well as overnight adventures.

Full Day Hike (See Canyon)

Description:

Outdoor enthusiasts love Arizona Rim Country since it sits on the edge of the world’s largest stand of ponderosa pines and it’s typically 20-30 degrees cooler than temperatures in the valley! Besides the Grand Canyon, the Mogollon Rim is Arizona’s second most spectacular landform. The Rim is an escarpment 7,000 feet plus that presents a dramatic drop of over 2,000 feet to the communities below. It is a land of extreme beauty, natural endowments, and historical significance. It offers abundant wildlife viewing in three national forests and was the home of Zane Grey who wrote several of his books nearby at a cabin on Tonto Creek. The Rim is a place of mystery, beauty and intrigue.

Join us for a forested climb along Christopher Creek in the Mogollon Rim. A great choice to escape the Phoenix heat! The trail provides a good amount of shade due to the abundance of alligator juniper, ponderosa pine, and gnarly oak trees. Expect an idyllic setting along the creek lined with mint, ferns, and grasses. Great hike for any season…in the spring, the creek will be running very well. Summer is awesome for spotting wild strawberries and raspberries right along the trail. Fall is the ultimate BEST time to do this hike with the maples and aspens turning amazing fall colors!

Itinerary:

Departing at 8 am from Fountain Hills, we will arrive at the trailhead around 9:30 am and prepare to hike to the top of the Mogollon Rim! This beautiful hike begins with an easy stroll with a simple creek crossing, but soon morphs into an endurance-testing sheer incline up a 1,700 ft haul to the top of the rim. You will enjoy the colorful spread of wildflowers, luscious forest smells and the crossings of Christopher Creek with the occasional “peek” through the forest at the incredible view. We may even spot some wildlife along the way! At the summit, we will enjoy a nutritious lunch while immersing ourselves in the beauty the forest has to offer, before beginning our descent. We will make a stop at the springs on our way down and take a moment to cool off in the creek before leaving this magical place. We will arrive back in Fountain Hills around 5pm.

3 Day/2 Night Adventure

Besides the Grand Canyon, the Mogollon Rim is Arizona’s second most spectacular landform. It offers abundant wildlife viewing in three national forests and was the home of Zane Grey who wrote several of his books nearby at a cabin on Tonto Creek. The Rim is a place of mystery, beauty and intrigue.

The highline trail just under the Mogollon Rim provides 51 miles of spectacular vistas of rim canyons, brushy hills, and unique rock formations. Most of the route traverses forest consisting of an interesting mix of ponderosa and pinyon pine, several species of juniper, AZ cypress and various oaks and aspens. Near water sources, deciduous trees abound. The highline trail, established in 1870 was used to travel between homesteads and to attend school in Pine. Zane Grey and Babe Haught used the trail while hunting. A portion of the highline trail is part of the Arizona trail.

This hike is a great option for the hiker who wants to cover a lot of ground, but with the bonus of not carrying a heavy backpack. Your overnight necessities will be transported to each evening’s camp by one of our amazing guides, while you will only be required to carry a day pack with your water, snacks and necessities for the day. In addition, we will ensure there is an ice cold beverage of your choice waiting at the end of each day’s hike with a delicious five course meal! There may even be a mint on your pillow!

Itinerary:

Day 1

Departing Fountain Hills bright and early at 6 am, we will arrive at the trailhead shortly after 7 am to begin this exciting 3 day hike. After a nice flat first mile, we will climb a finger ridge that extends from Milk Ranch Point. After cresting the ridge, the trail descends and passes through an open area overgrown with scrub oak and manzanita, then into a lush, green area. We will stop for lunch (which will be waiting for us, prepared by one of our great guides) and have an opportunity to dip our feet in Webber Creek…maybe pick some wild raspberries along the creek too! After lunch, the trail alternately climbs and descends with several creek crossings. As we near our first night’s camp, the trail meanders through some lovely pine and spruce forest. Upon arrival, a cold beverage will be waiting and our camp will be set up and ready for us to take a needed rest before enjoying a well-prepared evening meal and campfire.

Day 2

After enjoying a cup of coffee and a cooked breakfast, we will begin our day 2 hike. While one Arizona Hiking Adventure guide accompanies you on the hike, the other will break down camp and prepare to meet us at the end of this long day’s hike. On today’s hike we will walk through the charred remains of the 1990 Dude Fire. However, with all of the downed wood, this has lead to great views. We will have a sack lunch along the trail and arrive at Tonto Creek, where camp will await us (and yes…a cold beverage!) There will be an opportunity to trout fish in the creek while a scrumptious dinner is being prepared. As the sun sets, we will rest our muscles with some storytelling around the campfire.

Day 3

You will awake again to coffee and a delicious breakfast, after which we will embark on our last day’s adventure. Lunch will be served in a beautiful setting creek-side surrounded by wildflowers and tall ferns. We will culminate our 3 day journey after an additional 6 miles of gorgeous rim country scenery.
