Four Peaks Wilderness Adventure

A major landmark in Arizona this is one hike you don't want to miss.

Full Day Hike

Description:

The Four Peaks rise dramatically out of the desert ascending over 5,000 feet from the desert floor. On a clear day, they can be seen from downtown Phoenix. This is the premier climb in the Phoenix area. It consists of both easy trail and class 3 scrambling up a scree filled crevasse. From Brown’s peak, (the highest of the four peaks) the view is truly amazing. One can see not only Saguaro Lake to the south and Roosevelt Lake to the north, but about ¼ of the state of AZ from the top! On a good day, Humphrey’s peak near Flagstaff can be spotted. Four Peaks Wilderness is home to abundant wildlife including black bear, ring-tailed cats, skunks, coyotes, deer, javelinas and mountain lions, not to mention rattlesnakes and scorpions!

Itinerary:

We will depart Fountain Hills around 8 am, and arrive at the trailhead between 9 and 10 am. The drive getting to the trailhead is an adventure of its own! The hike begins through chaparral trees and isolated pine trees. After about an hours hike we will reach the saddle where the trail intersects with the Amethyst trail. We have a few options at this point to check out the Four Peaks Wilderness, depending on your energy level. One option is to hike to the mine. This trail contours along the slope just below the peaks, descending gradually as it does so. The path is overgrown but otherwise easy walking with the exception of one short steep downhill section as you round the third peak and arrive at the mine. We will lunch along the return route to the saddle. Upon return, we can take the scramble route to the top of Brown’s peak. After taking some time to enjoy the incredible views and snapping some photos, we will return by the route we came, returning to Fountain Hills around 6 pm. Meals: Lunch and snacks provided.

Day 1

We will depart Fountain Hills around 8 am, and arrive at the trailhead between 9 and 10 am. The drive getting to the trailhead is an adventure of its own! The hike begins through chaparral trees and isolated pine trees. After about an hour’s hike we will reach the saddle where we will lighten our load by setting up camp for the night. We have a few options at this point to check out the Four Peaks Wilderness, depending on your energy level. One option is to hike to the mine. The path is overgrown but otherwise easy walking with the exception of one short steep downhill section as you round the third peak and arrive at the mine. We will lunch along the return route to the saddle. Upon return, we will take the scramble route to the top of Brown’s peak, strategically planning it to coincide with sunset. We will gingerly (with the assistance of headlamps) make our way back down to our campsite and enjoy an evening meal and campfire.

Day 2

We will begin our day with coffee and a nutritious breakfast while discussing the many hiking adventures that await us today. Many thanks to John for organizing such a great trip, an amazing guy…and a little crazy too (but I like it)!! As soon as we reached our 1st destination, he cited our next summit to climb. An adventure of a lifetime!
