Fossil Creek Wilderness

Tour this amazing perennial stream that emits 20,000 gallons of water per minute and is home to some rare and endangered plant life.

Full Day Hike

Description:

Fossil Creek, one of only two “wild and scenic” rivers in Arizona, seems to appear out of nowhere, gushing out of a series of springs at the bottom of a 1700 ft deep canyon. Emerald green and aqua blue water cascade over multiple falls and deep, clear pools of water creating a beautiful oasis. It is a rare riparian area within an otherwise arid landscape. Most people come to Fossil Creek to sunbathe, wade, hike and birdwatch. It’s also a photographer’s paradise! While you’re here, keep your eyes open for javelin, beaver, otter, leopard frogs and black hawks.

Itinerary:

Departing at 7am from Fountain Hills, we will arrive at the trailhead around 9am and begin our descent into the canyon. We will experience beautiful scenery, vegetation and rock formations on our way to the waterfall oasis riparian area. Here, we will relax in the shade while enjoying a nutritious lunch. After some time exploring the area, and perhaps taking a dip in the 70 degree water, we will begin our challenging climb back to the top. Our almost 1700 ft ascent will be a challenge, but the satisfaction will be priceless as we complete our journey. We will arrive back in Fountain Hills around 6pm. Meals: Lunch and snacks provided.

Many thanks to John for organizing such a great trip, an amazing guy…and a little crazy too (but I like it)!! As soon as we reached our 1st destination, he cited our next summit to climb. An adventure of a lifetime!
